What is Hyperhidrosis?

Hyperhidrosis is a medical condition characterised by excessive sweating—more than what is necessary for the body to maintain its core temperature of 37°C. This condition can localize, affecting specific areas such as the face, armpits, palms, and soles of the feet. Alternatively, it can generalize, affecting most of the body. While hyperhidrosis is not a harmful condition, but it can significantly impact self-esteem and confidence, leading to severe psychological effects.

What Areas of the Body Are Affected by Hyperhidrosis?

Underarms (Axillary Hyperhidrosis): Excessive sweating in the underarm area is one of the most common forms of hyperhidrosis.

Palms (Palmar Hyperhidrosis): Excessive sweating in the palms particularly botherses and may interfere with daily activities.

Feet (Plantar Hyperhidrosis): Excessive sweating of the feet can lead to foot odor, discomfort, and fungal infections.

Face and Scalp (Facial Hyperhidrosis): Excessive sweating on the face and scalp can be socially embarrassing and may interfere with makeup or hairstyles.

Groin Area (Groin Hyperhidrosis): Excessive sweating in the groin area can cause discomfort and skin irritation.

Chest and Back (Truncal Hyperhidrosis): Excessive sweating on the chest and back particularly causes problems in warmer climates or during physical activity.

Frequently Asked Questions (FAQs)

Sweating cools your body naturally. Your nervous system triggers your sweat glands automatically when your body temperature rises. Nervousness can also make your palms sweat.

In many cases, no apparent cause exists for hyperhidrosis, often resulting from an issue with the part of the nervous system that controls sweating. We call this type primary hyperhidrosis. We call hyperhidrosis with an identifiable cause secondary hyperhidrosis.

With hyperhidrosis, sweat glands work overtime for no clear reason and produce excess sweat. Certain odors and foods, such as coffee, citric acid, chocolate, peanut butter, and spices, as well as emotional stress and anxiety, can trigger focal hyperhidrosis.

Allergan produces Botulinum toxin, commonly known as Botox®, as a well-known treatment for excessive sweating. This toxin blocks the chemical signals at the nerve endings, preventing them from activating the sweat glands. As a result, it effectively reduces excessive sweating.

When treating hyperhidrosis with Botox®, we administer multiple small injections spaced a few centimeters apart in the armpit. This treatment can also target excessive sweating of the hands, feet, other body parts, and the face.

You may find the injections uncomfortable, but most people do not describe the treatment as painful, as numbing cream is applied to the areas beforehand.
Patients who receive Botox injections for hyperhidrosis typically begin to see results within a few days after treatment, with the full effects becoming noticeable within two weeks.
After the hyperhidrosis treatment, you can return home and resume your normal activities. However, we recommend avoiding deodorants or perfumed products on the treated area for the next 12 to 24 hours to prevent irritation.
Botox is not a permanent solution for excessive sweating. The effects of a single hyperhidrosis treatment can last between 4 and 12 months.
  1. Identify dietary triggers and activities that exacerbate sweating to minimize their occurrence.
  2. Consider utilising specialised powdered deodorants containing aluminum chloride.
  3. opt for loose-fitting attire to reduce the visibility of sweat marks.
  4. Choose moisture-absorbing socks and change them at least twice daily if feasible.
  5. For foot hygiene, select leather footwear and alternate shoes daily to allow proper ventilation.
  6. Avoid wearing tight clothing or synthetic fabrics like nylon that can exacerbate sweating.

In 1994, a study highlighted the efficacy of Botulinum toxin (Botox) in reducing facial wrinkles, leading to its widespread adoption as a cosmetic treatment. Since then, Botox has also been utilised for various medical purposes, including treating eye disorders such as strabismus and blepharospasm, as well as addressing muscle stiffness, spasms, and movement disorders like cervical dystonia and torticollis. Additionally, it is commonly used to enhance the cosmetic appearance by reducing wrinkles in areas such as the frown lines between the eyes, forehead furrows, crow’s feet, and neck creases.
